Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty

Issued by Interlock Roofing. What it covers, in the document's own terms:

  • The aluminum roofing panels, trims and their factory finish, against manufacturing defects that result in rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, losing impact resistance with age, burning or supporting combustion, where the defect materially affects the product's performance.
  • Splitting, cracking and perforation from hailstones 1.5 inches in diameter or less. Other hail damage, such as cosmetic dents, is excluded.
  • Wind resistance of up to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification.
  • The Alunar® coating for 30 years from substantial completion against chalking beyond a rating of 8 (ASTM D-4214) and fading beyond 5 Hunter ΔE units (ASTM D-2244), under normal atmospheric conditions.
  • For the original purchaser: the manufacturer's material and labor costs to repair, refinish or replace a nonconforming product, at its discretion.

The installation · from your installer

Workmanship terms come from your installer

Metal Roofing New York does not install roofs and does not warrant the installation. The certified Interlock installer assigned to your project is an independent contractor holding a Nassau County or Suffolk County home-improvement license, who contracts with you directly. The workmanship warranty is theirs.

New York's General Business Law Article 36-A (section 771) requires a written home-improvement contract, signed by the contractor, with a signed copy to you before any work begins. It must show the contractor's name, address, phone number and license number, approximate start and completion dates, a description of the work and the materials, and the price, and it must tell you that you may cancel until midnight of the third business day after you sign. The law does not set a workmanship warranty, so have the installer's terms written into that contract.

  • The workmanship warranty written into the contract: how long, what it covers, whether it transfers
  • The county license number on the contract, checked with Nassau or Suffolk County Consumer Affairs
  • How your deposit is protected: an escrow account or a bond
  • Who to call about a workmanship issue, and how quickly to report it

How roof warranties work, and what to ask

What warranty comes with an Interlock roof on Long Island?

From Interlock Roofing, the manufacturer: the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty on the aluminum material and its factory finish. From your installer, a separate workmanship warranty written into their home-improvement contract. Metal Roofing New York does not install roofs and does not warrant the installation.

Does the warranty cover ice dams?

No. Ice damming, and ice and snow shedding, are stated exclusions. Ice dams come from heat loss into the attic and from ventilation, so ask the installer to look at both before the roof goes on.

What does "lifetime" mean in the Guardian warranty?

The life of the original purchaser, for as long as they remain the registered owner of the home. It is not the life of the house, and it is a limited warranty: the document sets out what is covered and what is excluded.

Who stands behind the installation?

The installer does. Metal Roofing New York does not install roofs and does not warrant the installation. The certified Interlock installer assigned to your project contracts with you directly, and their workmanship terms are written into their contract. On Long Island, the home-improvement contract must be in writing under General Business Law Article 36-A; have the workmanship terms written into it.

Can I transfer the warranty if I sell my home?

Yes, once. The first subsequent registered owner receives coverage to 50 years from the substantial completion date. The new owner sends proof of purchase to the manufacturer within 60 days of the sale, with a $300 transfer fee.

Does the Guardian warranty cover hail?

It covers splitting, cracking and perforation of the panels from hailstones 1.5 inches in diameter or less. Other hail damage, such as cosmetic dents, is excluded, along with severe weather events and the other exclusions listed in the document.

What does the 120 mph figure mean?

The manufacturer warrants that the product resists wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification. It is a warranty figure, not a building-code rating; the design wind pressure for your roof is set by the code that applies at your address.

How do I make a claim?

In writing to guardian@interlockroofing.com, within 30 days of the issue becoming known. Include your name, address, phone number, warranty certificate number, a description of the issue and photographs. For a problem with how the roof was installed, contact the installer named on your contract.
