Metal Roofing New York supplies the roof and certifies the installer. A certified Interlock installer is assigned to your project, gives you a written proposal, does the work and sets the workmanship terms. The material carries the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing.

    A certified installer is assigned

    An independent roofing contractor holding the Nassau or Suffolk home-improvement license, certified by the manufacturer on this system, is assigned to your project. The installer visits, measures and looks at the deck, the attic and the eaves.

    The installer's written contract

    The price, the profile and color, the eave and ventilation details and the start and completion dates, in a written contract with the installer's county license number on it, as New York's home-improvement law requires.

  4. Step 4

    The installer does the work

    The installer pulls the permit with your town or village under their own license and installs the roof to the manufacturer's specification. Workmanship terms come from the installer.

    The Guardian warranty

    Once the installation contract is paid in full, the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing, covers the material and finish for you, and transfers once when you sell.

A Long Island roof gets nor'easters from October to April, the tail end of hurricanes in late summer, salt air on both shores and a winter that hovers around freezing. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each.

Wind

Nor'easters and the tail end of hurricanes

Long Island takes wind from two directions: nor'easters from October to April, and tropical systems that reach the South Shore in late summer. The New York State codes are built on the International Codes; your building department has the design wind speed for your address. ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluates the Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile profiles for wind uplift under those codes. Wind resistance warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification.

Salt

Two shores, a bay and salt in the air. Aluminum has no iron to rust

Every steel panel is cut somewhere. On an island that is a lot of houses. Aluminum contains no iron and cannot rust. Near the water, the assigned installer specifies stainless or aluminum fasteners to match.

Freeze–thaw

Freezing doesn't ruin a roof. Freezing and thawing does

A Long Island winter hovers around the freezing line, which is harder on asphalt than deep cold: water works into the shingle's mat, freezes, expands and delaminates it from the inside, many times a season. Aluminum has no mat and absorbs nothing.

Ice dams

Ice dams start in the attic

Ice dams form when heat escaping through the roof deck melts snow that refreezes at the cold eave: an insulation and ventilation problem that shows up as a roofing symptom. Interlocked aluminum sheds snow sooner and does not rot when a dam forms, but no roof covering prevents ice damming, and it is a stated exclusion in the Guardian warranty. The assigned installer looks at the attic, not just the roof.

Hail

Impact-rated, and honest about what that means

The Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile profiles carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, verified by Intertek for Delta Building Products: the highest class in the standard. Long Island hail is occasional rather than routine. The Guardian warranty covers splitting, cracking and perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches; any insurance credit is your carrier's decision.

Fire

Class A, stated the precise way

Under ASTM E108 the fire classification belongs to an assembly, not to a panel. For this system that reads Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, over GAF VersaShield underlayment as evaluated in ICC-ES ESR-2053. Aluminum itself does not ignite.

New York rules worth knowing before you sign

On Long Island the contract, the license and the deposit are all regulated. Four things to check.

A written contract

General Business Law Article 36-A requires a written home-improvement contract with the contractor's name, address and license number, a description of the work, the price, and approximate start and completion dates.

Your deposit

The contractor must hold your deposit and progress payments in an escrow account or post a bond (GBL § 771-a). Ask which one, in writing.

A county license

Nassau and Suffolk each license home-improvement contractors at the county level. Check the number on the contract with the county's consumer-affairs office before you sign.

Your insurance

A metal roof does not automatically change your premium, and most Long Island policies carry a separate hurricane deductible whatever the roof is made of. Ask your carrier what applies to your house.

Who installs the roof?

What has to be in the contract?

New York's home-improvement law (General Business Law Article 36-A) requires a written contract with the contractor's name, address and license number, the work, the price and approximate start and completion dates, and requires your deposit and progress payments to be held in escrow or bonded (§ 771-a). The contract is between you and the assigned installer.

How do I check the installer's license?

Nassau and Suffolk each license home-improvement contractors at the county level. Check the license number on the contract with Nassau County Consumer Affairs or Suffolk County Consumer Affairs before you sign. Certified means certified by the manufacturer; it is not a state or county license.
