How does a roof replacement work through Metal Roofing New York?

It starts with a request: a minute online or a call to the toll-free line. Metal Roofing New York assigns a certified Interlock installer for your area, who visits, measures the roof, looks at the deck and framing where they can, goes through profiles and colors with you, and gives you a written proposal under their own business name. Anything that needs attention underneath belongs in that proposal, not in a change order later.

On install day the Interlock® aluminum system goes on: panels that lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, so there is no exposed screw head or loose edge for wind and driven rain to work on. The Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing, covers the material and finish.

Tear-off or roof-over?

Cedar shingles and shakes, concrete or clay tile and natural slate always come off. A single layer of asphalt shingles can be roofed over only after inspection, where the deck is sound and local code permits: no rot, no soft decking, nothing trapped underneath that should come out. If it isn't suitable, the tear-off is in the written proposal from the start.

What can replace asphalt, cedar or tile?

Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile, all aluminum, at about 0.41 to 0.59 lb per square foot installed depending on profile (ICC-ES ESR-1790), a fraction of the weight of slate or concrete tile. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope.

This site offers one roofing system. If you're comparing it with an asphalt re-roof, you're comparing a roof you'll replace again with one built not to need it.

Built for a Long Island year

Nor'easters from September to April (National Weather Service), the tail end of hurricanes in late summer, freeze–thaw through the winter and salt air near the water are what wear a roof out here. Aluminum absorbs no water and has no steel to rust, and the panels lock on four sides; wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification.

Ice dams come from heat escaping into the attic and from ventilation, not from the roof covering, and no roof prevents them on its own. The installer should look at your attic ventilation and insulation at the visit.

New York rules worth knowing before you sign

The license: Nassau and Suffolk each license home-improvement contractors at the county level. Look the installer's license up with Nassau County Consumer Affairs or Suffolk County Consumer Affairs before you sign.

The contract: New York's General Business Law § 771 requires a written, signed home-improvement contract with the contractor's name, address, phone and license number, approximate start and completion dates, the work and materials, and the price. You may cancel until midnight of the third business day after signing.

Your payments: the contract must tell you that the contractor must deposit payments received before completion in an escrow account, or post a bond, contract of indemnity or irrevocable letter of credit instead (GBL § 771).

What does the warranty cover, in plain language?

The Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing, covers material and finish for the original homeowner while they own the home, and transfers once: the second owner is covered to 50 years from substantial completion. Workmanship is excluded from it; the assigned installer gives their own workmanship terms in writing. Ice damming is a stated exclusion. Read the full terms before you sign.

Questions, answered

How long does a roof replacement take?

It depends on the size and complexity of the roof and what is underneath. The assigned installer gives you an estimated install window in the written proposal, before you sign.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof on Long Island?

It depends on your town or village and the scope of work. The assigned installer checks what your building department requires for your address and pulls any permit needed.

Can a metal roof go over my shingles?

Sometimes, only after inspection: a single layer of asphalt can be roofed over where the deck is sound and local code permits. Cedar, concrete or clay tile and natural slate always come off.

Where is roof replacement available on Long Island?

Nassau and Suffolk counties, from the Queens line to Montauk. New York City's five boroughs, Westchester, the Hudson Valley and upstate are not served.
