What is an Interlock® aluminum roof?

An Interlock® roof is made of interlocking aluminum panels, each locked to its neighbors on all four sides with the fasteners concealed under the panel above. Nothing is screwed through the weather surface. The panels are stamped to look like slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile.

The panels are made in North America by the manufacturer, Interlock Roofing. Metal Roofing New York supplies the roof on Long Island, certifies independent roofing contractors on the system and assigns one to your project. It does not install roofs. The installer is an independent roofing contractor holding the Nassau County or Suffolk County home-improvement license, certified by the manufacturer on the Interlock® system and assigned to your project, who signs the contract with you and pulls the permit with your town or village.

Offered on Long Island: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile.

Why aluminum, for a Long Island roof?

Because Long Island's weather goes after exactly what aluminum doesn't have: tabs to lift, steel to rust and fibers for water to freeze in.

Nor'easters and hurricanes

Nor'easters bring gale-force northeast winds, rough seas and sometimes coastal flooding, and are most frequent and most violent from September to April (National Weather Service). New York has also taken 12 hurricane strikes from 1851 to 2004, five of them major (National Hurricane Center). Interlock® panels lock on all four sides; wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification.

Salt air on both shores

Between the Sound, the bays and the ocean, much of Long Island lives in salt air. Aluminum forms an oxide film that blocks further oxidation, and there is no steel inside an aluminum panel for salt to rust (ASM International). Fasteners and flashings are matched to the aluminum system.

Freeze and thaw

Water that soaks into asphalt or wood freezes, expands and thaws again through the winter, opening the material from the inside. Aluminum absorbs no water, so freeze–thaw has nothing to work on.

Snow and ice dams

Smooth aluminum sheds snow sooner than asphalt; snow guards go where a slide would land on an entry, a deck or a walkway. Ice dams come from heat escaping into the attic, no roof covering prevents them, and ice damming is a stated exclusion of the material warranty.

Which profiles, and what paperwork does the building department see?

Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile, in the manufacturer's Alunar® color range. The aluminum panels weigh about 0.41 to 0.59 lb per square foot installed, depending on profile (ICC-ES ESR-1790), a fraction of concrete tile or natural slate. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope.

On Long Island the building department reviews the manufacturer's code evaluation. ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluates the Interlock® shingle, slate, shake and tile panels under the International Building and Residential Codes, on which New York State's residential code is based.

Questions, answered

Who installs aluminum roofing on Long Island?

The installer is an independent roofing contractor holding the Nassau County or Suffolk County home-improvement license, certified by the manufacturer on the Interlock® system and assigned to your project, who signs the contract with you and pulls the permit with your town or village. Metal Roofing New York supplies the roof but does not install it; the roof carries the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing.

Is aluminum roofing a good choice on Long Island?

For a house you plan to keep, yes. Aluminum cannot rust in salt air on either shore, absorbs no water for freeze–thaw to work on, and interlocked panels leave no tab for a nor'easter to lift. Ice dams are a different matter: they come from heat loss into the attic, and ice damming is a stated exclusion of the material warranty.

Does the roof meet the code on Long Island?

Your building department checks the manufacturer's code evaluation. ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluates the Interlock® shingle, slate, shake and tile panels under the International Building and Residential Codes, on which New York State's residential code is based. Wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification, and the installer confirms the fastening for your address.

Is an aluminum roof better than a steel roof?

Both are metal roofs, but steel depends on its zinc or aluminum-zinc coating to keep from rusting, and aluminum has no steel to rust. Aluminum is also about a third of the density of steel. Steel roofing usually costs less up front. The steel vs aluminum guide sets out the differences.

How much does an aluminum roof cost on Long Island?

It depends on the roof's area, pitch and complexity, what comes off, the profile and options such as the Class A assembly. The assigned installer measures the roof and puts a price in a written proposal; this site publishes no price, because one number would be wrong for most houses.

Can an aluminum roof go over my existing shingles?

Sometimes, only after inspection: a single layer of asphalt can be roofed over where the deck is sound and local code permits. Cedar shakes, concrete or clay tile and natural slate always come off first. The assigned installer inspects the roof and your building department has the final say.

Is an aluminum roof noisy in the rain?

Installed over a solid roof deck and underlayment, as residential Interlock® roofs are, it is not the drumming of bare metal on an open-framed barn. The deck and underlayment make the difference.

How long does an aluminum roof last?

Aluminum has been known to last over 100 years. That is a property of the metal, not a promise. What is in writing is the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty and the 30-year Alunar® coating warranty, plus the installer's own workmanship terms.
