Why do cedar roofs wear out on Long Island?

Cedar takes on water. Through a Long Island winter that water freezes and thaws in the wood again and again, and with humid summers, shade and salt air near the water, the shakes split, cup, curl, grow moss and rot, and need cleaning and re-treating to last.

Aluminum absorbs nothing and cannot rot or rust, so there is nothing in the panel for water, sun or salt to work on.

Can you keep the cedar look?

Yes, with the Cedar Shingle and Shake profiles. Interlock's Shake profile has deep, hand-split shadow lines; the Cedar Shingle profile has the flatter look of a sawn cedar roof. Both are aluminum, lock on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, and weigh about 0.41 to 0.59 lb per square foot installed depending on profile (ICC-ES ESR-1790).

Shake and Cedar Shingle suit the Capes, Colonials and shingle-style houses of the North and South Shores. In a historic district, check your town or village's landmarks or historic preservation rules before you choose a profile and color.

Does the cedar have to come off?

Yes. A cedar roof always comes off before an Interlock® roof goes on, and the assigned installer puts the tear-off in the written proposal from the start, along with any deck repair the inspection finds.

How does fire risk change?

Untreated cedar shakes are commonly unrated for fire. The Interlock® roof has Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, over GAF VersaShield® underlayment per ICC-ES ESR-2053 (ASTM E108). The rating belongs to the assembly, not to the panel alone, and aluminum itself does not ignite.

Who does the work?

The installer is an independent roofing contractor holding the Nassau County or Suffolk County home-improvement license, certified by the manufacturer on the Interlock® system and assigned to your project, who signs the contract with you and pulls the permit with your town or village. Metal Roofing New York supplies the roof but does not install it; the roof carries the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing.

Questions, answered

Is aluminum a good replacement for cedar shakes?

Yes. The Cedar Shingle and Shake profiles keep the cedar look without the rot, splitting, moss and re-treatment, at about 0.41 to 0.59 lb per square foot installed.

Will it look like real cedar?

From the street it reads as a shake or shingle roof. The certified installer assigned to your project brings samples and colors to the visit so you can judge it on your house.

Can a metal roof go over my cedar shakes?

No. Cedar shingles and shakes always come off before an Interlock® roof goes on, and the tear-off is in the installer's written proposal.

Do I need approval for a metal roof in a historic district?

Possibly. Some Long Island towns and villages have historic districts with their own review. Check with your town or village before you sign; the installer can give you the profile, color, specification sheets and warranty the review asks for.
